In the earliest hours of June 10th, 1886, Mount Tarawera on the North Island of New Zealand began to awaken. What followed was New Zealand’s worst natural disaster in recent history, the eruption of Mount Tarawera. The volcano violently erupted, exploded, and ejected tonnes of ash and tephra, or volcanic fragmental material, into the air and throughout surrounding areas. The impacts on local people were detrimental, and the impacts on surrounding landforms were also severe.download

The 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera became known as the greatest natural disaster in New Zealand’s recent history because of its enormous scale, severity, and long lasting impacts on the environment and people. Many parts of the story of Mt Tarawera’s eruption in 1886 are interesting and unusual, such as its uncommon basaltic lava, and the split of the mountain. But all in all, the events have helped us now to learn more about New Zealand’s natural environment.
